hex kit by cone of negative energy
Hex Kit is a map-making tool for tabletop adventure gamers by Cecil Howe, but I like to use it as a sort of hex-based version of Playscii. It’s slightly clunkier (duplicate character sets have to be made for each colour in the palette, for example) but otherwise my process is identical.
